The gooseberry is thought to be native to Asia, northwestern Africa, India, and Europe. This fruit is a member of the family Grossulariaceae and a relative of the black currant. The gooseberry is described as having a distinctive flavor all its own and varies in color from green, yellow, and white to various shades of pink, bright red, and even black, depending upon the species.

In Europe,​ the gooseberry can grow to the size and shape of a plum, while in the Northern Hemisphere—the U.S. and Canada—it’s much smaller, approximately a half inch in diameter. While often described as being acidic in flavor, recently hybridized varieties are quite sweet.

For centuries gooseberries have been eaten directly from the vine. But in the U.S., supplementing your diet with this highly nutritious fruit may be challenging as they are not readily available in supermarkets. 

Ingredients

  • 2 carrots

  • 1 medium apple

  • 1 cup gooseberries

  • 1 slice fresh ginger

  • 1/2 cup almond milk, or ​oat, ​coconut, or dairy milk; more as needed

  • 1/4 cup baby spinach, ​collards, ​beet greens or wheatgrass

  • Optional: 1 handful nuts and seeds

  2. Combine all of the ingredients in a blender and blend until desired smoothness.
