Electric green and possibly too much fun, the Mexican Samurai tequila shot is one that you simply have to try. This is one of those shots that makes you wonder why it's a shooter at all. It's delicious and may be too good to slam, but you certainly can if you like!

The recipe comes from Ty Ku Liqueur, the brilliant green spirit flavored with fruits and botanicals against a soju base. The shot pairs that citrus-dominated liqueur with tequila and a touch of sour mix, offering a delightful taste everyone will enjoy at your next party.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce tequila

  • 2 ounces Ty Ku Liqueur

  • 1 dash sour mix

Steps to Make It

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, pour the tequila and Ty Ku. Add a dash of sour mix.

  3. Shake well.

  4. Strain into a shot glass.

  5. Serve and enjoy.

Tips

  • Even if you choose to drink it slowly, the shot looks best when served in caballitos (tall, thin shot glasses, traditionally used for straight tequila).
  • The recipe mixes up a 3 1/2-ounce shot and that requires a larger than normal shot glass. Alternatively, split it between two small shot glasses or just pour it into a rocks glass.
  • A blanco tequila is an excellent fit for this shot and its clean taste will let the Ty Ku shine.
  • You can purchase sour mix at most liquor stores. Look for it with other nonalcoholic mixers like grenadine and tonic water.
  • You can also make your own sour mix and it's incredibly easy (and cheaper). Essentially, it's a simple syrup that's flavored with lemon and/or lime juice. It's a useful bar ingredient that can be used in sour drinks and margaritas, too.

Recipe Variations

  • If you cannot find Ty Ku, you can use an orange liqueur, such as triple sec or curaçao. You won't get the same green color and the taste will change slightly.
  • Build on this tasty drink and serve it so you can enjoy it longer. Strain it into an old-fashioned glass filled with ice or serve it up in a cocktail glass for a funky tequila martini.
  • You can also go with a tall glass and top it with your favorite soda. Ginger ale and citrus sodas are great choices.

How Strong Is a Mexican Samurai Shot?

This drink may be stunning, but that sweet taste and captivating green glow hide a potent shot. When mixed up, the alcohol content will fall in the 21 percent ABV (42 proof) range. That's half the strength of a straight shot of tequila. Drinking more than one will add up rather quickly and may catch you by surprise.
