Coffee is one thing you never want to forget. There's nothing worse than dragging yourself out of bed to discover the lack of a morning brew. Or worse yet, no milk, cream, or sugar. It happens to everyone. So take care of your future self by making a batch of this homemade instant coffee mix to have on hand in case of emergency. When your kid drank all the half-and-half or your husband brewed the last cup and didn't pick any more up, you'll have your special stash of this delicious mix to see you through.

Plain old instant coffee often isn't very good, plus those little packets it comes in are just too small to get a proper fix. If you're a coffee-fueled hustler, you need something more substantial. And, you sure don't need any extra angst. It's time to roll up your sleeves and do it yourself. If you don't, you'll feel like a fool plowing through box after box of instant packets until one day you wake up and all of those are gone as well. No way, Jose.

Now you could simply mix a jar of instant coffee with some powdered creamer and call it a day. But that isn't very fun or very special. If you're going to do something, you want to do it right. That's where the cocoa powder and powdered sugar come in. They really go a long way to round out the flavor of instant coffee crystals. Try the optional secret ingredient...cardamom. It's subtle, but it really takes this instant coffee mix over the top.

Besides using this stuff as your backup stash, it's also great for camping, road trips, or with the emergency stuff in your car.

Ingredients

Steps to Make It

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. Transfer all ingredients—powdered non-dairy creamer, instant coffee, cocoa powder, confectioners sugar, and cardamom (if using)—to a quart jar with a lid. Shake to mix.

  3. Store coffee mix in the jar or transfer to a smaller airtight container.

  4. To make a cup of coffee, mix 3 tablespoons of the instant coffee mix with 12 fluid ounces of hot water, stirring well until combined and dissolved. Enjoy!
